Ruby Western grew up in Burlington, Vermont. She studied at Smith College and the Slade School of Fine Art. Her style, concentration, and medium continue to evolve, but she remains loyal to the human form, Picasso’s letters (but not his treatment of women), and listening to a healthy amount of Missy Elliot while painting. Acrylic paint has proven to be a revelation. She paints very quickly, and the fast-drying nature allows for her to pursue multiple directions in the same hours. Though initially involved only with painting the female form outright, she enjoys experimenting with deconstruction and gestural approaches to indicate more than the tangible parts of a human.
